Feast of Saint Maternus
📅 Every year, on 18 July
On 18 July Melara, a municipality of 1,870 inhabitants in the province of Rovigo, celebrates its patron Saint Maternus (San Materno); in August the Pumpkin Festival is held.
On the banks of an old branch of the Po, at Mariconda, there was a Bronze Age village that did something rare: it worked glass, at a time when almost nobody in Europe knew how. The glass beads of the villages of southern Veneto turn up across half of central Europe, along the amber road.
The name, on the other hand, comes from honey: in Roman times this was bee country, and the bees have stayed on the coat of arms. In 1315 the village passed to the diocese of Ferrara, which put a viscount in the fortress; nothing of the castle remains, but the fifteenth-century bell tower of the parish church is built on its ruins, and stands in front of the façade instead of beside it.
