White and yellow flour, almonds, butter and sugar, broken by hand: sbrisolona is Mantova's cake, already served at the Gonzaga court.
Read more →Serravalle's town hall is not at Serravalle. The comune is a scattered one, and the seat is in the hamlet of Torriana, which lies exactly halfway between the two settlements: Serravalle a Po, which gives the comune its name, and Libiola, which is the most populous. Neither of the two won, and the town hall ended up at the equidistant point.
The name too is a matter of debate. The most immediate reading derives it from the geographical position, the «lock of the valley». But some compare it with the Serravalle of the lower Blenio, in the Swiss canton of Ticino, and trace it back to sala vallis: the Lombard sala, that is the place where justice was administered. In that case the name would have passed through a chancery-style sara vallis and then, by rhotacism, become Serravalle — a courthouse turned into a lock by some copyist. The village stands on the Po, with a floodplain park along the river; and between 1886 and 1933 it had a station on the tramway that linked Brescia to Mantua and Ostiglia.
