Canegrate

Province: Milan · Region: Lombardy · Population: 12,438 · Postal code: 20010

The arms show a dog walking behind a grate, but that is only a play on the name: strip off the suffix -ate, common in Lombard place names, and what is left is Cà negrate, blackened houses. Other readings point to Latin cannetum, a reed bed, or to a Celtic root; the grate may instead come from the arms of the Canegra, a Lombard family probably from here.

In the Santa Colomba quarter, excavations in the fifties uncovered a cemetery of about two hundred graves and many bronze objects, dated to around 1200 BC: hence the Canegrate culture, named after people who probably came down into the Po plain through the Swiss alpine passes. A Napoleonic decree of 1809 suppressed the neighbouring comune of San Giorgio su Legnano and absorbed it into Canegrate; later the two swapped pieces of land.
