San Giorgio su Legnano

Province: Milan · Region: Lombardy · Population: 6,730 · Postal code: 20010

The “su” in the name is literal: the town stands higher than Legnano, from which it was detached in the sixteenth century. Until 1862 it was plain San Giorgio; a royal decree then added the rest to tell it from its namesakes. Earlier it was Sotena, or Sotera, a name on two bricks dated 1393, from the foundations of the oldest church.

“Sotera” is still in gold on the coat of arms, beside the saint and dragon; locally it is read as “underground”, after the Roman graves: folk etymology, though the tombs are real. In 1648 the community bought its way out of enfeoffment, owing a landowner three thousand lire; two poor harvests made repayment impossible, and eight years later it asked the creditor's son to take it in fief.
