Busto Garolfo

Province: Milan · Region: Lombardy · Population: 13,479 · Postal code: 20020

In the local dialect Busto Garolfo is Büst Picul, little Busto, a name that sets it apart from Büsti Grandi, which is Busto Arsizio, and Büst Cava, which is Buscate. The earliest record of the village is a private deed of June 992: Domenico, archpriest of Dairago, gave the canons of Sant'Ambrogio in Milan a plot of vineyard in the place called Bustus Garulfi.

The arms, per fess red and silver with a capital B counterchanged, come from those of the da Busti, a Lombard family whose shield in the Stemmario Trivulziano carries two of them. In 1664 Giambattista Losetti sold the village to Giuseppe Arconati for 4,760 Milanese lire, and the king of Spain made the buyer marquess of Busto Garolfo. A royal decree of 1870 attached Olcella and Villa Cortese to the comune: Olcella stayed, Villa Cortese left after the Second World War.
