Saint Victor the Moor, patron of Villa Cortese
📅 Every year, on 8 May
Villa Cortese celebrates Saint Victor the Moor on 8 May, in the church dedicated to him.
The name probably comes from two Latin words: the vicus of the first settlement and the curtis it grew into as neighbouring farms joined it; in old documents the village is Vilcortex, then Vilacortexia, finally Villa Cortese. A sarcophagus from the first century AD, now in the Guido Sutermeister museum in Legnano, shows Roman settlement here. The oldest record naming it is a deed of 1261, in which the canons of San Giorgio list their holdings between the Olona and the Dairasca road.
Its town hall, though, was lost and regained more than once: abolished by Napoleon and attached to Dairago, restored by the Austrians, abolished again in 1868 and tied by royal decree to Busto Garolfo, the neighbouring rival. Autonomy returned only in 1966, and the townspeople chose the new coat of arms by vote: a felled tree trunk with a green shoot rising from its roots.
