Casarile

Province: Milan · Region: Lombardy · Population: 3,867 · Postal code: 20080

There are two schools of thought about the name, and they describe two different villages. The first derives it from the Latin casearile, the place where cheese is made and kept: a village of cattle sheds and dairy huts, like many on this plain. The second says instead that the name comes from the first house built here, which stood on a rile, which in dialect is a little stream. Cheese house or house on the stream: in one case it is a trade, in the other an address.

Three thousand eight hundred and sixty-seven inhabitants in the metropolitan city of Milan. On the municipal arms there is a narrow blue band, and it is the Naviglio Pavese, on whose banks the village stands. In 1751 the inhabitants were 260; in 1809, after the annexation of Zavanasco, 769; in 1859 they were 872. In 1811 Casarile was itself annexed to Binasco. Between 1880 and 1936 the village had a stop on the tramway that linked Milan to Pavia along the canal.
