Lacchiarella

Province: Milan · Region: Lombardy · Population: 8,390 · Postal code: 20084

Lacchiarella lies south of Milan, in the low plain, and its name means "little dairy", from the milk once produced here. A more recent theory links it instead to the many Lombard place names built on lagar, camp, and to the Lombards quartered halfway along the old road between Milan and Pavia. Cascina Decima confirms the road: the Roman Mediolanum-Ticinum passed beside it, and its name recalls the tenth mile from Milan.

In 898 the Hungarians sacked and destroyed the village; the Milanese answered with a castle of keep, towers and moat, garrisoned until 1275, when the cost forced its dismantling. In the thirteenth century Matteo Visconti had the keep alone rebuilt; it houses the town council today. The arms hold both stories together: the tower is that castle, and the lion with a quince branch comes, slightly altered, from the arms of the Sforza, among the first lords of the place. In 1786 the comune was moved into the province of Pavia, and its geese were known enough for Cesare Cantù in the nineteenth century to call it a village famous for geese.

Our Lady of the Assumption, patron of the Goose Palio

📅 Every year, on 15 August; autumn brings the Goose Palio, inspired by the 15-16 August games

Lacchiarella celebrates Our Lady of the Assumption on 15 August, in the provostry church dedicated to her. The town, known since ancient times for goose farming, hosts the Goose Palio in autumn, a contest among seven districts inspired by the traditional games of 15 and 16 August.
