Rognano lies in the northern Pavese, west of the Naviglio Pavese, right on the boundary with the metropolitan city of Milan, which is some twenty kilometres away. That position explains a record: at the fifteenth general census of the population, the one of 2011, Istat recorded it as the comune with the greatest increase in inhabitants over the previous census. In 2004 the people here were a little over three hundred; now there are twice as many. It is the kind of village the city has pulled towards itself without its ceasing to be a village.
Before all that, Rognano is known from the twelfth century under the name Rognanum, and belonged to the Campagna Soprana of Pavia. It was part of the fief of Marcignago, which was the Pallavicino's from 1539 to 1717 and passed afterwards to the De Portugal. In 1841 two suppressed comuni, Soncino and Villarasca, were joined to it: the comune of today is therefore made of three villages put together. Around it there are six more, and the arms are recent, granted in 2008.
