The centre of Vernate lies on the line of an ancient decumanus, the transverse axis of a Roman camp: the village street still follows today the layout of a military plan two thousand years old. The name, on the other hand, is older than Latin and comes from a tree: verna, which in the Celtic tongue meant alder, and indeed there is an alder in the municipal arms. Beside it stands the blue lion of the Ferrari of Milan, feudal lords of the village from 1538.
In the hamlet of Coazzano, the oratory of the Santissimo Crocifisso was ordered in 1357 by Bianca di Savoia, who had just received these lands as a gift from her husband Galeazzo II Visconti. Not far off stands the most important monument of the municipality, a Visconti rural castle of the mid-fourteenth century that has changed trade twice: first adapted as a convent of the Poor Clares of Pavia, today in use as a farm. At Moncucco the parish church has its bell tower planted above the façade, and among its bells two are old, one of 1676 and one of 1747. Three thousand one hundred and eighty-one inhabitants south-west of Milan.
