In 1158, Emperor Frederick Barbarossa marched through here; by 1799, it was Russian General Suvorov's turn. For centuries, Cassano d'Adda acted as the volatile frontier between the Duchy of Milan and the Republic of Venice. Thanks to its strategic river crossing, this town of 18,552 residents became a recurring battlefield for European powers, including Napoleon Bonaparte.
The armies have long since vanished from the right bank of the Adda. Now enclosed within the Adda Nord Park, the municipality forms a quiet border between the Milan and Bergamo provinces.
