Pozzo d'Adda

Province: Milan · Region: Lombardy · Population: 5,667 · Postal code: 20060

Pozzo d'Adda bears the name of a river that does not flow through it. The d'Adda was added to it in 1862, and it seems to refer not to the watercourse, which waters the neighbouring villages but not this one, but rather to the d'Adda family who had held it in fief. The rest of the name comes instead from the alluvial ground, which is full of wells. The first certain record dates from 1252: a parchment of the monastery of Sant'Ambrogio, signed by a small landowner who described himself as living in Pozzo di Vaprio, because at that time the village was an appurtenance of its neighbour.

For centuries the comune had two parishes and two different rites. The one in the main village belonged to the vicariate of Trezzo and followed the Roman rite, the one in the hamlet of Bettola depended on Inzago and followed the Ambrosian; only in 2007, after the two communities had been brought together, was a single rite adopted, the Ambrosian rite of Milan. The hamlet owes its own name to a small refreshment stop that stood at the eighteenth mile of the Roman road between Bergamo and Milan.
