Cassina de' Pecchi

Province: Milan · Region: Lombardy · Population: 13,206 · Postal code: 20060

The arms of Cassina de' Pecchi carry two bees in a red chief above a green tree: the bees are the canting arms of the Pecchio of Milan, the tree comes from the blazon of the Serbelloni, lords of the place. Around lies the Martesana plain, crossed by the canal of the same name, which feeds the ditches that irrigate the whole territory.

Today's comune is three villages added together: in 1811 Cassina was suppressed and merged into Cernusco sul Naviglio, then, independent again, annexed Camporicco in 1841 and Sant'Agata Martesana in 1870, a commune of its own until then and still a separate parish. The name of Camporicco has long been argued over: a Campus Henrici read in archbishop Ansperto's will, or the field of the Corio, who owned the land. The finest and least credible version traced it to a vein of gold at the Cascina Malpaga, of which an abbot from Rho claimed to have seen a paper of golden sand with flakes almost as big as a small coin.
