Long before it became the world’s second most produced PDO cheese, Gorgonzola was simply a town in the province of Milan. It was here, reportedly in the 9th century, that locals first created the distinctive blue-veined cheese using unskimmed cow's milk. Today the product is a global staple, approaching five million wheels a year.
While modern production has largely shifted to Novara, this Lombard municipality of 19,400 residents remains the historical home of its namesake. If you are in the area during September, you can attend the annual Sagra Nazionale del Gorgonzola, a festival dedicated entirely to tasting both the buttery dolce and the crumbly piccante variations.
