The waters of the Naviglio Martesana flow directly through this municipality, located just 11 kilometers northeast of Milan. This canal system shapes the local geography and provided the town with its modern name, replacing the historical designation of Cernusco Asinario in 1859.
The town of 30,697 people gained official city status only recently. In 1985, Italian President Sandro Pertini signed the decree recognizing its urban expansion, cementing its modern role within the historical Martesana territory.
