Morimondo

Province: Milan · Region: Lombardy · Population: 1,183 · Postal code: 20081

The municipality was called Coronate, and on the twelfth of March 1871 it decided to take the name of the abbey: Morimondo, from the French monastery of Morimond near Dijon, from which the first Cistercian monks had come in 1134. Coronate still exists, but as a hamlet. There is another explanation of the name too, from the French moire mont, hill in the marsh, because the abbey was built on a rise in the middle of the water.

Those monks made the landscape: they drained the bank of the Ticino, dug channels and laid out the water meadows. The church you see today, all in brick, was begun in 1182. The municipal arms sum up how much the abbot counted: a mitre, because he had episcopal rank, a crozier and a sword, because he held civil and judicial power as well. In 1798 Napoleon suppressed the monastery and its treasures were scattered.
