Casorate Primo

Province: Pavia · Region: Lombardy · Population: 8,480 · Postal code: 27022

Until the nineteenth century the town was simply Casorate. Emperor Lothair I gave its lordship to the bishop of Pavia in 849, and in 1164 Frederick I placed the village under Pavia. Milan was nearer, and the Milanese diocese always kept it as the seat of a pieve, yet Casorate stayed administratively tied to Pavia — a split that still holds, San Vittore answering to the Abbiategrasso deanery of the archdiocese of Milan while the comune sits in the province of Pavia.

Feudal dependence on the bishop lasted into the eighteenth century, and in 1418 a bishop, Pietro Grassi, granted the town its communal statutes. Armies crossed the plain: in 1239 the Lombard confederates beat Frederick II here, and in the next century Lodrisio Visconti, leading the Milanese, defeated the imperials. The arms show, on red, the crowned Visconti serpent swallowing a child, crossed by two silver swords.
