At Nerviano there are families called Re Fraschini, Re Cecconi, Redepaolini. The prefix was granted by Vittorio Emanuele II: in 1859, after the battle of Magenta, he stopped here, and in memory of his passing the residents, those of Sant'Ilario above all, were allowed to add «Re», king, to their surname.
Long before, in May 1160, Frederick Barbarossa had come through with rather different intentions: he cut the vines, destroyed the crops and sacked the village to cut off Milan's supplies. Nerviano was the head of a pieve, and according to the Liber Notitiae the churches under it were thirty, with thirty-eight altars. There are 17,089 residents.
