Pogliano Milanese

Province: Milan · Region: Lombardy · Population: 8,141 · Postal code: 20010

Until 1927 the town was called simply Pogliano; Milanese was added to tell it apart from namesakes in the provinces of Como and Turin. The name comes from the Latin Publi Agmina, the camps of Publius, after the Roman troops quartered here; remains from that period have turned up where the cemetery stands. On the Duchy of Milan map in the Vatican Palaces' Gallery of Maps the village appears as Poiano.

For centuries Pogliano lived off farming, on clay soil made fertile by irrigation and by the Villoresi canal: cereals, well-kept meadows and above all mulberry trees, because silkworm rearing was widespread here. The farmsteads and the mills on the Olona survive, from the Mulino Litta to the Mulino Ragno, and so does the memory of the silk mill in the centre, where the library now stands: the cocoons were carried there. The silk market collapsed after the Second World War and factories filled the town.
