Pregnana Milanese

Province: Milan · Region: Lombardy · Population: 6,867 · Postal code: 20010

Pregnana first appears in a document to be sacked by Frederick Barbarossa's armies, in the twelfth century; the name looks older, and is traced to a Roman personal name, Proenius or Perennius. Until 1900 it was called simply Pregnana: on 20 September that year the council obtained government leave to add "Milanese", ending the confusion with towns of the same name.

The arms are green, with a blue chevron surmounted by the keys of Saint Peter, to whom the old village church was dedicated, and a silver tower with Guelph merlons in base. The old parish church, in its present form from the mid-eighteenth century, sits on no foundations and has always suffered damp; after the new church went up it became a cinema hall, and is now the oratory chapel. In 1962 Olivetti opened its technology centre here, moving in the team then designing the Programma 101, the first personal computer in the world.
