Pero

Pero was long Cassina del Pero, a farmstead known in the tenth century whose main crop was fruit, above all pears; on the Vatican's painted map of the Duchy of Milan the name is cut short to Ca del. A second explanation starts from the road: this was the first place out of Milan on the Mediolanum-Verbannus route, and the name would come from a Raetic phrase for along the way. The earliest mention is a parchment of 962; the name was shortened to Pero only in 1894.

The arms repeat it: a golden pear tree in fruit, a wavy blue band for the Olona, a red circle for Cerchiate and Cerchiarello. A nineteenth-century Simplon guide called it sad and half deserted, blaming this perhaps on the damp soil and the rice-field vapours; other accounts recall crosses marking where the Merlata brigands had killed. Cerchiate was its own comune until 1928: joined to Pero, it would have preferred Rho.

Saint Elizabeth, patron of the land of the new Fiera di Milano

📅 Every year, on the second Sunday of September

Pero celebrates Saint Elizabeth on the second Sunday of September. On its territory, after an enormous reclamation effort, the new hub of the Fiera di Milano was built, designed by architect Massimiliano Fuksas.
