Masate

Province: Milan · Region: Lombardy · Population: 3,312 · Postal code: 20060

The foppe of Masate are the holes left by bricks. Here, north of the Villoresi canal, clay was dug, but after the Second World War the load-bearing solid brick was replaced by reinforced concrete and the pits were abandoned; the clay bottom held the rain and those hollows turned into ponds, which in Milanese are called precisely foppe. In 2005 the municipality restored them: the first is now an area with benches, children's games and a fountain in the middle of the little lake, while the other two have remained a habitat for water plants and amphibians.

The village stands on a low hill where the vine was grown and a white wine was made that pleased Carlo Porta, the Milanese poet. Near the Villoresi a small restored chapel marks the place of the seventeenth-century lazaretto, built for the plague. In the municipal arms, rarely enough, there is a cabbage-white butterfly beside three ears of wheat. In 1809 Masate took in Basiano, and two years later was itself annexed to Inzago. Three thousand three hundred and twelve inhabitants in the metropolitan city of Milan.
