Saint Gotthard, patron of May
📅 Every year, on 4 May
Trezzano Rosa celebrates Saint Gotthard on 4 May, in the church dedicated to him. The town's other patron, Our Lady of the Rosary, is celebrated on the first Sunday of October.
Trezzano Rosa and Trezzano sul Naviglio, some forty kilometres apart, became namesakes through a series of exchanges. This village was called Derzano — so it appears in 1045 and still in 1398, in the survey ordered by Gian Galeazzo Visconti — and the form Trezzano came to it by analogy with Trezzo, to whose pieve it belonged; then that same form was extended to the other village, which had previously been called Trenzano.
When the two names ended up coinciding, something had to be done: in 1862 a royal decree added the Rosa to this one, from the sixteenth-century sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary, while the other got the sul Naviglio. Until after the Second World War Trezzano remained a country village living on farming and silkworms: it was the women who raised them, in the courtyards that still today form the historic core of the built-up area.
