Grezzago

Province: Milan · Region: Lombardy · Population: 2,842 · Postal code: 20056

For a hundred and thirty years Grezzago did not change. From 1851 to 1981 the number of inhabitants stayed almost identical, around a thousand and a little more, and until 1969 the only industrial plant in the municipality was a silk-throwing mill: a village of two hundred and forty-nine hectares, with the manor house, the farmstead, the outbuildings and the chapel all together in the middle of the fields. Then, in recent decades, the population more than doubled, and today there are two thousand eight hundred and forty-two inhabitants.

The reason lies a kilometre away: the exit of the Milan-Venice motorway, which passes north of the village, and the nearness of Trezzo sull'Adda with its services; to which is added the cost of housing, lower than in the neighbouring municipalities. Of the older history there remain the chapel of San Martino, which in thirteenth-century documents belongs to the pieve of Pontirolo, and Palazzo Zoja, the lord's dwelling built in the fifteenth century with an arcaded court and towers at the corners, on the model of the Visconti castle-villas.
