The oldest record of Opera dates from 1280, in Goffredo da Bussero's Liber Notitiae Sanctorum Mediolani, which notes loco Ovari, ecclesia S. Petri. The same Latin name, Overa, sits inside that of the neighbouring hamlet of Noverasco. In the early Middle Ages opera had the legal sense of a church works board, so Goffredo's phrase might point to the works board of a monastery of San Pietro, of which no document survives.

At Mirasole a domus fratrum Humiliatorum flourished for more than four centuries: after Viboldone it was the order's chief production centre, and the Humiliati had turned wool working into something close to an industry. A catalogue of 1340 counted twenty-nine friars, eleven sisters and four servants there, and the house's Milan branch paid the Visconti a tax of 258 pounds, among the highest of the four hundred levies. When Pius V suppressed the order the house passed to the Swiss college in Milan. The fifteenth-century sanctuary of the Madonna dell'Aiuto has its high altar resting on an old Roman conduit.
