For a century Sesto San Giovanni was the factory of Italy: Breda, Falck, Marelli and Campari built giant plants here, and the density of workers earned it the nickname of «the Stalingrad of Italy». Today those industrial cathedrals — the gasometers, the blast furnaces, the Falck village — are among the most important industrial-archaeology landscapes in the country, and they are being transformed.
The name records a measurement: Sesto is the sixth milestone on the Roman road from Milan to Monza, and San Giovanni was added from 1100 to say whom it belonged to, namely the basilica of San Giovanni in Monza. It is the most populous comune in the Milan metropolitan area after Milan itself. Attached to the city and served by the underground, it is a practical, inexpensive base for visiting it. Villa Torretta, sixteenth-century and frescoed, is the surprise you do not expect among the chimneys.
