Cusano changed its name twice. In 1862 it became Cusano sul Seveso, because there were too many Cusano in the Kingdom of Italy; in 1915 it became Cusano Milanino, and this time the name was given to it by a quarter it was still building.
The Milanino is the first garden city in Italy built on the English model. It was the work of Luigi Buffoli, who in 1886 had founded the Unione Cooperativa and believed housing could be cooperative too: between 1909 and 1923 Liberty and eclectic villas went up there, with a great deal of greenery around them, a rare thing in this part of the hinterland. There are 18,905 residents.

Cusano Milanino celebrates Saint Martin on 11 November, in the parish church dedicated to him together with the Immaculate Conception; the town was the birthplace, on 17 March 1939, of the celebrated football coach Giovanni Trapattoni.
