Two farming villages — Cinisello and Balsamo — merged in 1928 and swept up by the boom: today it is one of the main cities of Milan's hinterland. Its noble card is Villa Ghirlanda Silva, an eighteenth-century residence with one of Italy's first English-style gardens, home to the Museum of Contemporary Photography: the first Italian public museum devoted entirely to photography.
With the metro at its edge and Milan twenty minutes away, it works as an economical base. Parco Nord, born on former Breda industrial land, is the green lung the hinterland built for itself.
