Saint Fermo, patron of Albiate
📅 Every year, on 9 August
Albiate celebrates Saint Fermo on 9 August, in the shrine dedicated to him.
Albiate lies in the Lambro valley, in Brianza, and is named in documents from the eleventh century. The name may come from the Roman family name Albius, or from alveolus, a hollow: in local dialect albioeu is a water basin, and the tie with the river marking the eastern edge, towards Triuggio, is plain. At the old bridge, now gone, the Visconti beat the Guelphs in 1324.
The bell tower of the parish church of San Giovanni Evangelista is older than the church it serves: it dates from the eleventh century, while the building was blessed in 1784. The sanctuary of San Fermo, standing before the sixteenth century, was enlarged in 1609, when Bergamo gave the town the relics of Fermo, Rustico and Procolo. In 1840 Bernardo Caprotti opened a mill with machinery for preparing cotton yarn; forty years later Galeazzo Viganò, once its director, set up his own textile works.
