The name of Seregno is said to come from a woman: Serena, niece of the emperor Theodosius and wife of the general Stilicho, who lived in the fifth century — in the old documents the town is Serenum, then Seregnum. Its territory is all flat, and it has an oddity you would not expect in Lombardy: not a single watercourse runs through it. The Lambro passes to the east, the Seveso to the west, and Seregno sits in between, dry, welded by now without a break to half a dozen neighbouring comuni.
It has been the market town of the lower Brianza for centuries: its pedestrian centre, one of the largest in the area, turns around Piazza Vittorio Veneto and the basilica of San Giuseppe, while the Barbarossa tower — the Romanesque bell tower left over from a vanished church — stands as a medieval witness among the shop windows. The Benedictine abbey of San Benedetto, with its Olivetan monks, is an oasis of Gregorian chant and herbal liqueurs. From the streets, on clear days, you can see the Grigna and the Resegone. A town of trade, cycling and heathland at its edges, two stops from Monza: industrious Brianza in its most recognisable form.
