Saint Antoninus and Our Lady of Sorrows, patrons of the Lambro valley
📅 Every year, on the third Sunday of September
Triuggio celebrates Saint Antoninus and Our Lady of Sorrows on the third Sunday of September.
The name Triuggio turns up in a document only from 1684; earlier the place bore other Latin names, all seemingly from trejectus, since one of the busiest crossings of the river Lambro ran through here. Hence the arms: a rowing boat in base on a blue field, two silver doves in chief, and a chevron that may allude to one of the many bridges over the river.
At Canonica, on the left bank of the Lambro, stands Villa Taverna, one of the oldest noble houses in the Milanese: before becoming a villa in the sixteenth century it was most likely a fortress, and enlargements designed by Pellegrino Tibaldi gave it a U-shaped plan. Giampaolo Osio, the Egidio of Manzoni's novel and lover of the nun of Monza, took refuge there on the run and was killed in its cellars. At Tregasio, countess Federica d'Adda had the Rotonda built in 1842, a circular national monument fronted by caryatids of the Christian virtues.
