In 1928 the king decreed the merger of the two comuni of Bovisio and Masciago Milanese, but the name and the seat went to Bovisio, and Bovisio alone. The people of Masciago protested for twenty years: only in 1947 did the comune become Bovisio Masciago.
Bovisio would come from bovis otium, the place where the Roman army kept its supplies and its animals; in 1935 a Gallo-Roman tomb found here supported that idea. The town has an odd shape: a strip of land, in places fifty metres wide, links it to a square area inside the Parco delle Groane. There are 16,596 residents.

Bovisio-Masciago celebrates Saint Pancras, patron of Bovisio, on the last Sunday of September, with the Expo Brianza craft fair; Saint Martin of Tours, patron of Masciago, is celebrated instead on the second Sunday of November with a re-enactment parade held for 50 years.
