Our Lady of the Rosary, patron of the land of Villa Bagatti Valsecchi
📅 Every year, on the second Sunday of October
Varedo celebrates Our Lady of the Rosary on the second Sunday of October.
The name of Varedo comes from the Latin viridetum, from viridis, green, after the vegetation that covered the area; the ground is flat and the Seveso crosses it, returning on the arms as a wavy blue band. The rest of the shield says who was in charge: the pot with vipers of the Manriquez marquises, who held the fief of Desio, to which Varedo belonged from 1580; the golden sieve of the Crivelli, lords of the fief of Varedo from 1676; the ox and lilies of the Bagatti Valsecchi; two crossed swords for the Agnesi, large landowners here.
The Bagatti had arrived in 1523, when the Milanese monastery of Santa Maria Maddalena handed them its Varedo estates. The villa that bears their name closes a long avenue shared with Palazzolo Milanese; Fausto and Giuseppe Bagatti Valsecchi remade it in late Lombard baroque at the end of the nineteenth century, reusing the monastery's columns. Of the Agnesi remain the villa at Valera and, before the town hall, a metal model of the versiera, the curve named after Maria Gaetana Agnesi.
