Renate

Province: Monza and Brianza · Region: Lombardy · Population: 4,177 · Postal code: 20838

On the tenth of May 1607 Renate had to quarter the Landsknecht soldiery of captain Alberto Baldovino's company, and in 1630 it was the turn of captain Rainoldo's, from colonel Ciamburgo's regiment. In between, on the village square, Gerolamo Villa knifed the soldier Maffeo Germano. It is exactly the world Alessandro Manzoni would describe two centuries later, and the coincidence closes in 1843, when his son Enrico married Emilia Redaelli in the parish church of Renate: they lived here for twenty years, in villa Cagnola-Mazzucchelli, and had seven children.

Four thousand one hundred and seventy-seven inhabitants in the province of Monza and Brianza, on rolling hills left by the glaciers; the name is said to come from Arenate, for the sandy soil. In 1530 the village counted ninety-one inhabitants and twenty head of cattle, and it all fitted into a few quarters: the centre, the medieval Tornago, the Vianò with its monastery and the Odosa farmstead on the boundary with Besana. Until 1565 the cure of souls was in the hands of the friars of Sant'Alessandro at Vianò; it was Carlo Borromeo, on pastoral visitation, who ruled that the parish church would be San Donato.
