Our Lady of the Rosary and the 940.019 locomotive
📅 Every year, on the second Sunday of October
Ronco Briantino celebrates Our Lady of the Rosary on the second Sunday of October.
Until 1863 the village was called simply Ronco. A ronco is ground wrested from the wood and broken in, and there were too many Ronchi in Lombardy for one alone to tell it apart: so the municipality took the surname of its own region and became Ronco Briantino. The name is the only thing it gained in the nineteenth century, because otherwise that century ate it twice: annexed to Bernareggio in 1811, restored to independence, and annexed to Bernareggio again in 1869, when its inhabitants were little more than seven hundred.
Today they are three thousand three hundred and eighty-nine, in the province of Monza and Brianza, of whose eastern side this is the northernmost municipality: four of the six villages it borders are already in the province of Lecco. In the coat of arms, granted in 1928, are the castle of the Capitani di Vimercate, among the oldest feudal families of the area, and the plant of the marquesses Busca, who held much land here. The territory lies between the upper plain and the first hills of Brianza.
