Cura Carpignano

Province: Pavia · Region: Lombardy · Population: 4,371 · Postal code: 27010

Calignano was a municipality until 1872, when it was abolished and joined to Cura Carpignano. Since then it has been a hamlet, and the curious thing is that it has hardly changed at all: in 1877 it had 602 inhabitants, in 2017 it counted 575. A hundred and forty years of Italian history have passed over a village that ends up with a few people fewer than when it ceased to be a municipality — while around it the municipality that absorbed it has grown past four thousand.

Cura Carpignano, four thousand three hundred and seventy-one inhabitants in the province of Pavia, is built entirely like that, by addition. The old core is Carpignano, known since the twelfth century and probably Roman in origin, from the family name Carpinius; it belonged to the Campagna Sottana of Pavia and in the fifteenth century was a fief of the Beccaria, later of the Tettoni. In the eighteenth century it swallowed Strazzago; in 1863 it took its new name; between 1871 and 1872 it absorbed Vimanone and Calignano, the latter formerly a fief of the Giorgi, counts of Vistarino. The coat of arms, of 1954, represents the Pavia plain furrowed by its watercourses.
