Lardirago

Province: Pavia · Region: Lombardy · Population: 1,200 · Postal code: 27016

The castle of Lardirago and the village around it belonged to the monastery of San Pietro in Ciel d'Oro in Pavia; in the sixteenth century they passed to the Collegio Ghislieri, which held them in fief until the eighteenth. It is a curious case: the lord of the place was a university college.

On the coat of arms there are two crossed swords, and they recall the fighting of 1154 that took place hereabouts between Milanese and Pavians, on the eve of the diet of Roncaglia summoned by Frederick Barbarossa. In recent times the boundaries have moved a good deal: between 1929 and 1947 Ceranova and Sant'Alessio con Vialone were attached to the municipality, and in 1963 the hamlet of Gioiello passed to Ceranova.
