Lomello

In the Lomellina they call the basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore the devil's church: the legend says the Evil One pulled it down and then raised it again in a single night, but the sun came up before he had finished. That is why the front is half fallen and the first two bays are still without a roof.

Beside it stands the baptistery of San Giovanni ad Fontes, octagonal, Lombard, with what is left of the original font: here, in November 590, Queen Theodelinda married Agilulf, duke of Turin, and every June the village stages it again. Before that it was Laumellum, a staging post on the road to Gaul; today there are 2,295 residents.
