On the coat of arms of Dorno there are two marble columns, and they come from a passage in Ammianus Marcellinus. The historian relates that the emperor Constantius II, after giving his sister Helena in marriage to his cousin Julian, escorted him from Milan as far as a place "marked by two columns", between Lomello and Pavia; from there Julian went on alone towards Turin. That spot was called Ad duas columnas, and it is here.

Dorno was a posting station on the straight Roman road that ran from Pavia to Lomello and on towards Gaul: the Itinerarium Burdigalense, the diary of a fourth-century pilgrim, names it as Duriae and specifies that it was a mutatio, that is the place where horses were changed — and indeed it lies exactly halfway between the two cities. The fief, from 1450, belonged to the Crivelli, who held it until the end of the old regime.
