On 16 August Scaldasole, a municipality of 967 inhabitants in the province of Pavia, celebrates its patron San Rocco.
Scaldasole has 967 inhabitants in the southern Lomellina, between the Terdoppio and the Erbognone, and the name says nothing about the sun: it probably comes from the Lombard sculdascio, the local judge, and tells us that a place of some weight already stood here between the sixth and the eighth century. The village is dominated by its castle, one of the most important fortified buildings in Lombardy.
The fief changed hands many times: from the Campeggi of Pavia, who in 1334 subinfeudated it to the Folperti, to Francesco III Pico della Mirandola, who came to live in the castle and died there in 1461; then to his daughter Taddea, lady of Scaldasole, wife of a Malaspina of Fosdinovo, and finally to the Gallio, who held it until the end of the fiefs. The municipal coat of arms, drawn from a seal of 1583, is the sum of those masters: the gold of the Folperti, the red of the Malaspina, the chequy azure and argent of the Pico.
