The village was called Samignana: so it appears in twelfth-century documents and in the list of Pavia's lands of 1250, and so it stayed until the eighteenth century. The fief was split: one part to the Sannazzaro, and from 1470 one part to the Reyna of Pavia, a family of distant Spanish origin; the two houses were still sharing it in 1707, the year the Lomellina passed to the House of Savoy.
At the beginning of the nineteenth century the municipality of Ferretto was merged into Semiana, having been almost empty already in the century before: today it is a farmstead and nothing more. In 1859 the municipality entered the province of Pavia. In the village there is a museum of country life inside a farm inn, and in July they hold Semiana Jazz, with the musicians of the Lomellina.
