The fief of Sartirana always ended up with whoever happened to be winning. Under the Visconti it went to the condottiero Angelo della Pergola in 1424; under the Sforza to the minister Cicco Simonetta, whom Ludovico il Moro later had killed; and by a deed of 28 January 1494 Ludovico himself gave it to his wife Beatrice d'Este, with every jurisdiction and the right to administer it as she saw fit. When she died the fief passed to the Guasco; in 1499 King Louis XII of France gave it to Cardinal d'Amboise; in 1521 it was the turn of Mercurino Arborio di Gattinara, the emperor's chancellor, and with his descendants it stayed until 1797.

The castle all this was fought over was commissioned at the end of the fourteenth century by Gian Galeazzo Visconti, to a design by the captain Jacopo dal Verme; the Sforza raised it by a storey and rebuilt its defences, entrusting them to Fioravanti, the architect who also worked on the defences of the Moscow Kremlin. Then the Gattinara turned it into a residence, and in 1934 it passed from the Arborio family to prince Amedeo of Savoy-Aosta. In the neo-Gothic cemetery lies Pina Rota Fo, the mother of Dario Fo; and on the first weekend of September the village fills up for the Sagra della Rana, the frog festival.
