Mede lies in south-western Lomellina, on the plain between the Po, the Agogna and the Sesia. In 1157 Frederick I confirmed it to the palatine counts of Lomello; one branch of theirs became the counts of Mede, who split into a great many lines, taking their own surnames in the sixteenth century, but bound themselves by pacts against selling feudal shares outside the family, so the fief stayed theirs under Milan's dukes, the Spanish and finally Savoy. On the Duchy of Milan map painted in 1581 in the Vatican Palaces the town is marked Medde.

The arms, red with a silver cross, carry a city's outer ornaments: the title dates from 1985. Rice rules the fields, and at Goido, whose name may point to an early medieval Gothic settlement, stands the Masinari rice mill, the oldest in Lomellina, built by friars in the eighteenth century; gold is still worked beside the paddies. Two very different artists came from here: Giuseppe Amisani, a portraitist called the painter of kings, and Regina Cassolo, who signed simply Regina and in the nineteen-thirties brought aluminium, celluloid and tin into futurist sculpture. The San Giuliani castle now houses the town library and much of her work.
