Feast of San Rocco
📅 Every year, on 16 August
On 16 August Albaredo per San Marco, a municipality of 349 inhabitants in the province of Sondrio, celebrates its patron San Rocco.
The village lies on the old via Priula, and its name says what it was: the passage between the lands of the Grisons in the Valtellina and those of «San Marco», that is of Venice. On the arms there is the Venetian boundary stone that still stands at the Passo di San Marco. The name was given by royal decree in 1863.
Here the slopes are too steep for machines, which is why they speak of heroic farming. From October to the end of May the farmers make matusc, a lean cheese; in summer, on pastures above sixteen hundred metres, they make bitto in the calecc, with milk still warm, and age it in the casere. The village has a dairy of its own, working the milk of a dozen farms: very few mountain villages still do.
