Pedesina

Province: Sondrio · Region: Lombardy · Population: 30 · Postal code: 23010

It is the third least populous comune in Italy, and for years it disputed first place with Morterone. It stands at a thousand metres on the slopes of Monte Rotondo, in the small valley of the Bitto di Gerola, and in the thirteenth century it was a fief of the Vicedomini. In the coat of arms there is the mountain, and a wavy silver band which in heraldry is usually a river: here, instead, it is the road that leads to Gerola Alta.

All through the twentieth century people came up here for the summer: there were two hotels for climatic stays, and now both are closed. Today most of the residents live on a pension, and the only business left is a restaurant-shop that also serves as the bar and the place to buy groceries. In the parish church there is a fresco by Cipriano Valorsa of 1564.
