Bema

Province: Sondrio · Region: Lombardy · Population: 130 · Postal code: 23010

Bema stands on a spur of rock, wedged between two valleys: on one side the Albaredo valley, on the other the Val Gerola. This is the Orobie side of the Valtellina, the shaded one, and the whole territory falls within the Orobie Valtellinesi park. For a comune of little more than a hundred inhabitants it borders seven different comuni: whoever sits on a watershed touches all those around it, and none of them for long.

There is a provincial road bearing its name, the Bema road, branching off the valley's main route to climb up here. Landslides, however, have made part of it impassable, and today the village is reached by an alternative route: the road named after the place is no longer the one that takes you there. From the last century the coat of arms remains, granted by royal decree in 1930; the buses, on the other hand, go down to Morbegno.
