Feast of Saint Euphemia
📅 Every year, on 16 September
On 16 September Teglio celebrates Saint Euphemia the Martyr; the town also preserves Palazzo Besta, now a museum.
The Valtellina takes its name from here: Teglio was its oldest chief town, and Valtellina means the valley of Teglio. The name of the village in turn matches the dialect word téi, the lime tree, though Dante Olivieri traced it to a Roman family name. The old centre stands at nine hundred metres on the Rhaetian side, at the sunniest and most commanding point of the valley: that is why, in the past, it mattered so much.
That position cost it dear. In 1432 Teglio was destroyed because it sided with Venice; in 1526 a plague killed about fifteen hundred people here; and on the night between the eighteenth and nineteenth of July 1620, during the Sacred Slaughter of the Valtellina, the church of Sant'Orsola was burnt. In Palazzo Besta, one of the great Renaissance residences of Lombardy, the archaeological museum is now housed, with the Bronze Age stelae found in the village.
