Villa di Tirano

Province: Sondrio · Region: Lombardy · Population: 2,957 · Postal code: 23030

Inside the mountain, at Stazzona, there is a hydroelectric power station in a cavern. It was built between 1935 and 1938 by the Municipal Electricity Company of Milan: the city made its own current a hundred and twenty kilometres away, digging into the rock of the Valtellina. The station lies at the lowest point of the valley's hydroelectric system and works with the water of the Sernio basin, dammed on the Adda, and with the water discharged by the Lovero plant, brought here by an underground channel eight and a half kilometres long; the catchment feeding the system measures 990 square kilometres.

The village, for its part, still counts itself by contrade: there are eleven, and they are called Campagna, Sant'Antonio, Derada, Piazza, Maranta, Peita, Beltramelli, Novaglioli, Sonvico, Valpilasca and Ragno. Villa di Tirano lies in the upper Valtellina, a little east of Tirano, and borders Switzerland to the north, with the Grisons municipality of Brusio. Above the houses, towards the Aprica, opens the Pian di Gembro. Two thousand nine hundred and fifty-seven inhabitants in the province of Sondrio.
