Aprica

Province: Sondrio · Region: Lombardy · Population: 1,588 · Postal code: 23031

Aprica stands exactly on the pass, and for that reason its territory belongs to two valleys at once: the waters on one side run down into the Valtellina, those on the other into the Val Camonica. Its fortune was made by a road. From 1848 the Austrian government of the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia built one which, through the Aprica pass, joined Edolo to Tresenda, making it possible to avoid the old Zapéi d'Abriga and the higher passes — Guspessa, Mortirolo, Gavia — impassable for many months of the year. The Austrians finished it just on the eve of the war that would drive them out of Lombardy.

Becoming a comune, on the other hand, took fifty years. Aprica was a frazione of Teglio, which lies on the opposite side of the Valtellina; it asked for autonomy in 1871, asked again in 1879, and obtained it only with the law of 20 December 1923 — while the exact boundaries came four years later still, in 1927. Hospitality, though, it had always known how to give: in the district of San Pietro, originally called Ospitale, there was already in the Middle Ages a xenodochium where travellers, soldiers and pilgrims stopped. At the end of February they hold the Sunà da Mars: from each of the six districts the bell-ringers come in costume, challenge each other with great cowbells in the square, and at the end everyone eats the mach.
