Biandronno

Province: Varese · Region: Lombardy · Population: 3,285 · Postal code: 21024

In 1953 Giovanni Borghi put the Ignis factory in a place where there was nothing: not in a town nor even near one, but in open marshy countryside, where the commonest trade was digging peat. From then the village changed its face, families arrived from the north and the south and the population grew quickly; Borghi built nurseries and sports centres around it, and some of those buildings are still there. In 1988 Ignis passed to Whirlpool, in the spring of 2024 Whirlpool Italia became Beko Europe, and in November of the same year the company announced the closing of two production lines out of five at the Cassinetta plant, with 541 redundancies.

On the water, by contrast, time runs long. The Isolino Virginia, in the lake of Varese, is one of the prehistoric pile-dwelling sites of the Alpine arc inscribed in 2011 on the Unesco world heritage list. The lake of Biandronno, small and secluded, is by now almost entirely dried up, while at Cassinetta the Brabbia channel begins and the marsh of the same name spreads out, today a nature reserve. Three thousand two hundred and eighty-five inhabitants in the province of Varese.
